Otavalo Market

This is me at the Hotel Eugenia having my traditional glass of wine. The people of Ecuador are so friendly, yet poor and it is a wonderful place to stay!
Today I went to Calderon, a town where women artisans make dough figurines by hand. It is a small town, but the work is exquisite.
Next we went through the Andes to Guayallabamba Valley. Here I am at the Emerald River in the Hills. There were many volcanoes and heavy clouds all day. It is semi-arid with limestone and interspersed with acacia and eucalyptus trees. A beautiful sight with many climbs and turns.

Finally the Otavalo Market where you can buy anything from linens, jewelry and brightly woven cloth. It was spectacular.

Our last stop was Cotachachi a town that thrives on the leather trade. Many people tan and make the leather goods (below is someone making short boots for men) to buy. Some of them were real works of art.
The day was a wonderful look into the Ecuadorian culture and the artesians who make wares as well as stunning vistas of the Andes.
I am going to an African concert in a little while and will blog again tomorrow.

  2. Earrings, t-shirts, shawls and postcards. No leather, sorry and Ecuador doesn´t have its own wine, so no purchase there.
